Beginning on Oct. 1, accepting credit card payments will be a risky prospect for any small business that doesn’t make the investment to upgrade its payment technology to EMV. With EMV (Europay, Mastercard, Visa) cards, the microchips make the authentication process for payment more secure.
But on October 1st, credit card companies and banks are changing their liability policy to make businesses responsible for any fraudulent payments made using a non-EMV system. In other words, if you accept a sponsorship payment of $1500, with what turns out to be a stolen credit card, the credit card company will not repay the business for the transaction. It’s also likely that insurance companies will raise rates on businesses that don’t use EMV systems

I’m certain that everyone reading this article knows what an API is. But just in case, here’s the wiki definition “In computer programming, an application programming interface (API) is a set of routines, protocols, and tools for building software applications”. More generically, an API allows disparate applications to converse or transfer data between them.
And that got me thinking how similar this definition is to the daily functions performed by our recruiters. This may seem like an odd analogy, but our recruiters are the interface or go-betweens that communicate between the hiring managers and the candidates. They are the conduit through which the requirements, expectations, processes and procedures flow.
At SherlockTalent, our recruiters are the best equipped to accomplish this human API task because they have at their disposal, one of the most candidate rich databases in the region. This gives them a competitive edge and gives you the hiring manager a broader choice of talent.

With so much of our data and applications residing in the cloud, it’s easy to overlook essential data that lives either in our local servers and PCs or in other locations we never consider.
Most in the IT world recognize the need for a backup strategy that embraces the local environment, but many forget that a corporate website, while ostensibly hosted in the ‘cloud’, is not necessarily backed up by the hosting provider.
Many providers have backup mechanisms that while capturing the raw data of your site, do a poor job of making site restoration easy. In addition, a backup stored in your hosting platform could prove useless if you no longer have access to the platform.
To facilitate one-click restoration of a corporate website, it is likely you will need a premium real-time cloud backup service. These services are relatively inexpensive when compared to the cost of loosing your site.

Like Cat-Nip to investors.
Our region is fast becoming a hot-bed of innovation and start-up – which is a good thing. On the plus side it brings investments, job opportunity and economic growth. But just because you have a great idea, and even if you have funding to develop and market your product, doesn’t mean it will be plain sailing.
Let’s say your idea is not only brilliant but also disruptive – yes, disruptive – meaning it’s likely to cause a paradigm shift in the market. This is the holy-grail of start-ups and Cat-Nip to investors.
Stormy seas ahead.
But even then, there could well be stormy seas ahead. Sometimes regulation and legislation can get in the way of progress. The most recent technology to fall foul of the regulators is ride sharing, long suffering from regional anxiety, popular ride-share pioneers Uber have finally been pushed out by our neighbors Broward County. The county recently rules that Uber (and competitor Lyft) could legally operat in Broward but under stringent regulation which Uber fels are not in the interest of its drivers. Lyft also announced that it too will leave Broward.
A network disrupted.
Uber and Lyft have built a network of convenience that gives consumers a choice about how they get from A to B – something so simple and yet we give it little thought. Broward residents now have one less choice.

There are so many tools available on the market today to help recruiters and the hiring managers. Some are database type applications that help recruiters collect, organize and manage candidate data, others are ‘connector’ type applications that help link candidates with hiring managers directly.
Some tools have developed a new ‘use case’, like LinkedIn, originally a social media platform for professionals, has developed into a fertile crop of candidates for recruiters. Others like the Resumator have moved beyond their original function-set to offer complex matching algorithms – a bit like online dating, and we’ve all heard horror stories about those platforms.
Ultimately, tools are useful and necessary components in the hiring chain, but the ultimate decision must be made by people, people who understand the requirements and reality of the current and ever changing marketplace. Do you need a trusted recruiter to grow your team? Call me today 305-651-6500 Alex@SherlockTalent.com
